So what is Panda Video Chat?

Panda Video Chat is a website where you’re put on a one-on-one video call with someone you haven’t met. It works in a phone or computer browser, you can start as a guest, and you can switch the call to voice or text if you’d rather not use the camera.

The Panda Video Chat home page is where calls start. This page is the slower read, for people who like to know what’s behind a button before they press it.

Is Panda Video Chat real, and is anyone actually on it?

Yes. It’s a working site, and the people on the other end of a call are real people sitting in front of their own phones and laptops. You can check that the quick way: open the home page, tap Start a call and see who picks up.

We won’t dress that up with invented reviews or a running total of calls made. People from more than 50 countries use it, so the first person who picks up could be almost anywhere.

Minute by minute

What happens in your first two minutes

Most of the worry about a first call is not knowing what the screen will do. Here’s the order of events, roughly as it plays out on a phone.

  1. 0:00 — You open the site

No sign-up screen and no form. You’re a guest from the first second, and the Start button is right there.

  2. 0:10 — You tap Start a call

Your browser asks for the camera and microphone. Allow both for video, or switch the match mode to voice or text before you tap.

  3. 0:20 — Someone comes through

A face appears. Give it a beat; the picture can take a moment to settle, and nobody expects you to talk before it does.

  4. 0:30 — Somebody says hi

Often it’s them, sometimes it’s you. Where you are and what time it is there makes an easy first line.

  5. 2:00 — You know where this is going

Enjoying it? Keep talking, and follow them from their profile afterwards. Not enjoying it? Hang up and tap again.

Every screen along the way, including where the people you follow end up, is described in how PandaChat works.

Is there a Panda Chat room?

No, not in the group sense. There’s no Panda Chat room where a dozen people talk at once. Two people per call, always. The nearest thing to a room is the Who’s online list, where you can see who’s around and choose someone to call.

If you were hoping for a chatroom, better to know that now. If you were hoping to actually hear one person without twenty other messages scrolling past, one-on-one is the whole idea. There are Live rooms too, but those are for watching one person on camera, not for a group conversation.

If you were looking for a room because one-on-one feels like a lot, the voice mode is the gentler start: no picture, just two people talking, and you can switch to video on a later call.

No download needed

It runs in the browser you already have, on iPhone, Android, Windows or Mac. There’s no installer and no store listing. On a phone you can pin it to your home screen so it opens from an icon.

The few taps that takes on each kind of phone are on the PandaChat app page.

It also means there’s nothing to update. Whenever you open the page, you’re on the current version, with no store prompt asking for space on your phone.

What does it cost?

Nothing to start. New users get free matches, and the site offers more as rewards now and then. Once those are used up, further matching costs coins. Coins also pay for gifts in Live rooms. There’s an optional VIP membership as well, with its details shown in the app.

The page on what’s free and when coins come in goes through it properly, including why we only ever say “free to start”.

Who’s on the other end

Strangers in the ordinary sense: people you don’t know, online at the same time as you. They live in different countries and speak different languages, and looking through Who’s online by language helps when you want someone you can follow without effort.

A call here doesn’t come with a script. One person wants five minutes of company on a slow evening, the next is practising English, the one after that is just curious who’s out there. You’ll get further by saying something real early on than by asking where they’re from and waiting.

For the matching side of things, the guide on how to call a stranger follows a single call from the first ring to ringing back.

Most of them are on phones, propped against a mug or a pillow, which is why the first second of a call so often shows a ceiling.

Starting as a guest doesn’t make you invisible to them, though; what they can see, and what to keep out of shot, is set out under staying safe on PandaChat.

Who Panda Video Chat suits, and who it doesn’t

Two short lists, so you can decide before giving it an evening.

It suits you if…

You enjoy a quick chat with a stranger and don’t need it to lead anywhere. You’re camera-shy at first and want to start on voice or text. You like the idea of calling back the people you got on with, instead of losing them the moment the call ends.

It won’t suit you if…

You want a dating service or someone to meet up with. You want group chat, with lots of people in one place. You need a guaranteed match in your own country; random matching can’t promise that. You want a native app from an app store; PandaChat lives in the browser, and you add it to your home screen yourself.

Quick answers before you try it

What is Panda Video Chat used for?

Mostly for short, unplanned video calls with people you haven’t met: someone to talk to on a slow evening, a bit of language practice, or plain curiosity about who’s out there. Some calls last a minute; the good ones run much longer.

Is Panda Video Chat a real site?

Yes. It’s a working website at pandachat.cam where you can start a call in your browser as a guest. The quickest check is to open it, tap Start a call and see who comes through.

Does Panda Video Chat have chat rooms?

No. There are no group rooms. Every call is one-on-one, and Who’s online is where you choose someone when you don’t want chance to decide. Live rooms exist for watching one person on camera, but they aren’t group calls.

How do I start my first call on PandaChat?

Tap Start a call, allow your camera and microphone when the browser asks, and wait a moment while someone is found. Or open Who’s online, pick a profile and press the video button there.

Do I need an account to use Panda Video Chat?

No. First calls work as a guest, straight from the Start button.

Is PandaChat free?

Your first calls are, and the occasional reward adds more; after that, coins come in.

Can I use Panda Video Chat on my phone?

Yes. It works in the browser on iPhone and Android, and you can add it to your home screen so it opens from an icon. There’s nothing to install.

How do I report someone on Panda Video Chat?

Open their profile and use the report option, choosing the reason that fits. You can block them from the same place. If something needs more explaining, email [email protected].

Ready when you are.
